Islamic terrorist wounds 2 police on French island of Reunion

Two French policemen were wounded by an Islamic terrorist in latest terror incident in France.

A man suspected of links to Islamic terrorism shot two police officers on the French island of Reunion in an incident under investigation by national counter-terrorism prosecutors.

The regional administration for the Indian Ocean island said in a statement that the two officers from a special national police intervention force were shot Thursday while trying to arrest “a dangerous individual.”

The terrorist was subdued and arrested. He was described as a man in his twenties believed to be a recent Islamic convert.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said anti-terrorism prosecutors took over the investigation.

Administration spokeswoman, Michelle Thomas, said the police officers’ injuries were not life-threatening.

France’s police union Unite SGP POLICE-FO said it was “deeply shocked and angry after this new attack”.

Réunion is an island and region of France in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar and 175 kilometers (109 mi) southwest of Mauritius, on the east African coast.

A jihadist network was taken down in Reunion in June 2015. Its leader, a 21-year-old known as “The Egyptian,” was arrested and transferred to Paris.

The shooting came a week after a police officer was killed in Paris in an attack claimed by the Islamic State (ISIS) group that shook up France’s presidential election campaign.

France is under a state of emergency after multiple Islamic terrorist attacks. More than 230 people have been killed in a string of jihadist attacks in France since January 2015.
