Israel started off its second round at the World Baseball Classic by working back from a 1-0 deficit against Cuba and winning 4-1.
Israel continued its Cinderella drive in its first scrap at the World Baseball Classic, by starting off the second round on Sunday with a bang and beating Cuba 4-1.
Israel managed to overcome a 1-0 deficit from Cuba’s Alfredo Despaigne’s home run in the second inning, and take the lead in the sixth. After Zach Borenstein singled to right, scoring Ty Kelly from second base, Blake Gailen added a third run with a double to right, scoring Nate Freiman.
After scoring another run in the 8th inning, Israel’s team was in for a scare in the ninth and final inning when Cuba threatened with a bases-loaded jam. Luckily for team Israel, Josh Zeid got Cuba’s Willian Saavedra to ground out to third, ending the game.
On Monday, Israel will face the Netherlands again and then Japan, its host for the second round, on Wednesday.
