Israel hit by mortar fire from Syria

Sirens in Israel’s north sounded as two mortars slammed into the Golan Heights. No injuries were reported.

The Syrian civil war again spilled into northern Israel on Tuesday when two mortars slammed into the Golan Heights. The mortars fell into open spaces, causing no damage or injuries.

Sirens were heard throughout the nearby Israeli towns, and farmers tending their fields near the border fence were forced to abandon them.

The mortars fell adjacent to the Quneitra area, where Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s army has been battling rebel forces for several months, both vying for control of the region.

Israel’s northern border with Syria and Lebanon has been especially tense since the IDF killed four terrorists operating out of Syria on Sunday. The terror cell was attempting to place an explosive device on the border with the intention of hitting Israeli security forces.

The incident occurred after reports from Syria emerged over the weekend of Israeli Air Force (IAF) airstrikes against Syrian army and Hezbollah weapons caches.

In late January, Hezbollah launched missiles at two IDF vehicles on the Lebanese border. Two soldiers were killed and seven wounded in that attack.
