Israel and the African country of Guinea are developing relations and have agreed to exchange ambassadors.
Dr. Dore Gold, Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met on Sunday in Guinea Conakry with the President of the Republic, Prof. Alpha Conde and ten of his ministers, among them the Ministers of Defense; Foreign Affairs; Economy and Finance; Energy and Water; Agriculture; Hospitality, Tourism and Handicrafts; and Communications.
The parties discussed the struggle against terrorism, international cooperation in agriculture, health, the war on Ebola in which Israel has assisted, and energy and water. They also discussed mutual support in international forums, and Guinea’s assistance in expanding Israeli activity in additional countries in West Africa.
Gold and Foreign Minister Makale Camara agreed to complete the process of appointing ambassadors, thus finalizing the establishment of full diplomatic ties.
Gold’s visit to Guinea, at the head of a foreign ministry delegation, “is the first manifestation of Israel’s strengthening ties with the republic,” the MFA stated.
The Republic of Guinea is a Muslim country in sub-Saharan West Africa, with whom diplomatic relations had been severed almost 50 years ago and which were renewed in June.
Sunday’s visit was in continuation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s historic visit to West Africa, and in accordance to the prime minister’s policy of strengthening ties with the continent.
