Israel nominates new police chief

Moshe “Chico” Edri will be Israel’s next Police Inspector General.

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan announced Friday his nomination of Moshe “Chico” Edri, a retired police major general, to be Israel’s next Police Inspector General.

“Edri is endowed with impressive and proven abilities as a commander, with many years of experience in a wide range of posts in the Israel Police and great expertise in the challenges facing it in coming years,” Erdan said in a statement. “All these make him the most appropriate candidate.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed Edri’s appointment, saying it “was a worthy appointment; Edri is a good and experienced officer.”

Edri’s appointment will be submitted to the committee that vets senior public appointments for approval. The nomination will then need the Cabinet’s approval.

He is slated to replace police chief Roni Alsheich in December.

Edri, who currently serves as the director general of the Public Security Ministry, “presented impressive plans to me for dealing with the main challenges facing the police according to my policies, and I am certain that his talents and unique experience will allow him to carry out many missions and bring about the strengthening of the public trust in the Israel Police,” said Erdan.

Edri, 51, last served as commander of the Tel Aviv District before retiring. He also served as the commander of the Jerusalem District in 2015 at a time when Palestinian terrorism rocked the capital.
