Israel restarts Leviathan gas field after five-week shutdown

The closure of Leviathan, Israel’s largest offshore natural gas field, forced authorities to ramp up the use of coal and diesel fuel for electricity production.

Israel’s Leviathan gas field resumed operations for the first time in five weeks after being suspended following the outbreak of war.

“Following assessments of the situation and examination of all relevant considerations, it has been decided at this stage to return the Leviathan rig to operation,” the Ministry of Energy announced.

“The supply of natural gas to the local economy continues and will now be increased following the integration of an additional rig into the production system.”

The closure of Leviathan, Israel’s largest offshore natural gas field, forced authorities to ramp up the use of coal and diesel fuel for electricity production.

The Karish gas field remains shut down, while the Tamar gas field continued operations.

In addition to domestic use, gas from Leviathan is also exported to Egypt and Jordan.

Energean, the company operating Leviathan and several other offshore gas fields, signed a memorandum of understanding in November to provide gas to Cyprus.
