Israel to accelerate fortification of northern communities

The proposal is set to address gaps in existing protections, introduce long-term funding frameworks, and recommend ways to cut through regulatory delays that have slowed construction.

Israel’s cabinet on Sunday approved a new initiative to speed up the protection of civilian infrastructure in northern communities, as security concerns persist along the Lebanese border.

Under the decision, a senior interministerial team will be formed to oversee the effort, headed by the Prime Minister’s Office and including officials from the Defense, Finance, and Housing ministries, as well as the IDF Home Front Command, the National Security Council, and planning authorities.

The team has been given 21 days to produce a comprehensive, costed program aimed at expanding fortified spaces in homes, public buildings, and key institutions.

The proposal is set to address gaps in existing protections, introduce long-term funding frameworks, and recommend ways to cut through regulatory delays that have slowed construction.

Officials will also examine whether structural upgrades can be combined with earthquake resilience measures and are expected to put forward short-term steps to improve public safety in the interim.

The escalation follows Hezbollah rocket and drone attacks on northern Israel and Israeli troops in southern Lebanon earlier in the day.

Despite a ceasefire, the group has continued near-daily strikes.

On Sunday morning, Hezbollah said it carried out two attacks on Israeli forces near the southern Lebanese town of Taybeh.
