Israel withdraws bid for UN Security Council seat

Apparently due to a slim chance of winning, Israel withdrew from the race for a seat on the UN Security Council.

Israel on Friday withdrew its candidacy for two seats on the United Nations Security Council in 2019/2020. The vote for five new members is scheduled for next month.

The Jewish state would have a small chance of winning due to the ongoing anti-Israel UN bias.

Nominees for the two-year term at the Council are selected according to their regional geographic location, and Israel is the only country in the Middle East not yet chosen. Unlike other countries slotted in the UN’s Asia-Pacific region, Israel is in the “Western European and Others” regional group due to adamant rejection of Muslim countries in Asia to Israel’s inclusion.

In an interview published exactly a year ago in The Jerusalem Post, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon expressed confidence about winning a seat on the Council, saying, “I think that it is clear that we will get the support of the US…. I think that we can even expect active support for this important bid.”

However, “After consulting with our partners, including our good friends, the State of Israel has decided to postpone its candidacy for a seat on the Security Council,” a statement issued Friday by Israel’s Mission to the UN said.

“It was decided that we will continue to act with our allies to allow for Israel to realize its right for full participation and inclusion in decision-making processes at the UN. This includes the Security Council as well as an emphasis on areas related to development and innovation,” the statement concluded.
