Israeli foreign minister: There is no substitute for relationship with US

Incoming Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen met on Monday with employees of the ministry and its representatives at Israeli missions around the world.

In his inaugural speech, he said maintaining a strong U.S.-Israel relationship remained the top priority.

“As in the past, so it will be the same in the future. Our priority will be the strategic relations with our closest ally, the United States. There is no substitute for Israel-U.S. relations. It is a long-term strategic partnership based first and foremost on common values ​​as well as on interests that we share,” Cohen said.

Cohen said he was pleased to speak with U.S. Ambassador to Israel Thomas Nides on Sunday. Cohen is scheduled to speak with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday afternoon.

Of the Abraham Accords, signed by Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain in 2020, and later joined by Morocco and Sudan, Cohen said, “The expansion of the Abraham Accords is not a question of if, but when.”

The Accords, he continued, had “dramatically changed the face of the Middle East.” In the past year alone, “trade volumes between Israel and the countries of the Abraham Accords crossed the threshold of 10 billion shekels,” and “beyond the economic contribution, there is a very significant security element for the countries involved as well as for the strengthening of regional stability,” he said.

“Next week, a working meeting of the CEOs of the foreign ministries is planned in Abu Dhabi in preparation for another summit of the foreign ministers planned for Morocco this coming March,” he added.

Turning to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, he said, “We will do one thing for sure—in public, we will talk less. We will prepare a detailed advisory from the Foreign Ministry to the Cabinet in order to formulate a responsible policy. In any case, the significant humanitarian aid to Ukraine will continue.”

With regard to Iran, Cohen said there is now an international consensus that the nuclear agreement with Iran is “no longer relevant.”

He said Israel, in tandem with building up its own independent military capabilities to deal with any scenario, would also work to form an international front to prevent a nuclear Iran.

According to a U.S. readout of the call, Blinken stressed the Biden administration’s steadfast commitment to a two-state solution and expressed his opposition of any Israeli policy that endangers it.

At a Foreign Ministry ceremony earlier in the day, Cohen denounced Palestinian intransigence in resolving the conflict.

“The Palestinians have rejected every single peace agreement offered to them,” Cohen said.

Addressing Palestinian attempts to put Israel on trial for alleged war crimes at the International Criminal Court, Cohen said, “Those that should be on trial are the Palestinian leaders.”

The Palestinian Authority is the only governing body “in the world that rewards those who murder Jews simply because they are Jews,” Cohen said.

“The international community must convey a clear message to the Palestinian leadership, to stop the incitement in education and the media and to end funding murderers of Jews,” Cohen said.
