Israeli left holds Netanyahu responsible for hostile UN resolution

The Israeli left is also infuriated by the anti-Israel UN resolution, but they’re blaming it on Netanyahu’s policies.

Member of Knesset Yair Lapid, head of the centrist Yesh Atid party, which, according to polls, is significantly more popular than the official Labor Opposition and runs neck and neck with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud, joined the Israeli government leaders in blasting the UN Security Council for its anti-Israel resolution on Friday.

The resolution states that Israeli communities “occupied since 1967” have “no legal validity.” It demands a halt to construction in eastern Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, saying this “is essential for salvaging the two-state solution.”

“The resolution yesterday was an act of hypocrisy,” Lapid said Saturday, adding that Israel will not accept it. “When a murderous terrorist group like Hamas praises the decision of the Security Council, it’s clear whom it serves.”

Lapid criticized left-wing politicians who blamed Netanyahu for the UN decision, saying “patriots don’t behave thus,” although, as contender for the Israeli leadership in the next election, he simultaneously criticized the prime minister’s foreign policy and failure to win international support.

“Netanyahu has lost control… and is trying to calm us with lies,” Herzog said in a statement Saturday evening. “We’re all likely to feel (the consequences of) this dangerous madness — all citizens of Israel, right or left wing — on our next visit abroad,” predicting they will receive “hostile treatment.”

Zionist Union number two and former foreign minister Tzipi Livni, chief Israeli negotiator in the failed US-led peace talks with the Palestinians, also slammed Netanyahu, claiming that he “knew and said clearly that the [settlement] regulation bill will bring about a Security Council resolution — and nonetheless conceded to the radical right.”
