Japan hit by powerful quakes

Japan sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries.

Japan’s island of Okinawa was hit by a 5.7 magnitude earthquake on Monday.

There is no danger of a tsunami.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency said the tremor occurred off the coast of Okinawa, at a depth of 40 kilometers below the sea surface.

The quake in the south followed a strong quake that hit Japan’s northern island just minutes beforehand.

A magnitude 5.5 quake shook Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost main island.

There was no fear of tsunami from there as well.

There were no reports of damage or injuries from the two almost simultaneous earthquakes.

Japan sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries.

In total, Japan has experienced three earthquakes on Monday, 28 earthquakes in the past 7 days, 67 earthquakes in the past month and 679 earthquakes in the past year.

Some 40 people were killed in April from a 7.0 magnitude earthquake near the island of Kyushu.
