JD Vance: Israel ‘may not like’ emerging Iran deal

The vice president said preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon remains Washington’s top priority.

Vice President JD Vance said that the U.S. and Iran are nearing a ceasefire agreement that would ensure Tehran never obtains a nuclear weapon, but acknowledged that Israel “may not like” the terms of the agreement.

During an interview with Fox News on Monday evening, Vance dodged questions about reported rifts between Washington and Jerusalem, including claims that the Pentagon is concerned about Israeli spying on the U.S.

“I think where the president has been very clear here is that while Israel obviously has some objectives that it has, the United States’ main objective in Iran is to ensure that Iran does not have a nuclear weapon,” Vance told the outlet.

“Over the last year and a half, we’ve created the space necessary where the president believes – and I think that he’s right – that we can get the long-term settlement to Iran’s nuclear deal,” he continued.

“Now, Israel may like that, they may not like that. But fundamentally, we think this is in the best interest of the United States of America,” Vance stressed.

He asserted that Iranians “don’t want this war to continue. It’s not in their best interest,” adding that the potential truce would be a “home run win for the American people.”

Vance’s remarks come after repeated statements from President Donald Trump that negotiators are on the cusp of achieving a long-term ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, which would end the fighting and see a return to normal maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to reporters on Monday evening, Trump said that Washington and Tehran are “in the final throes of what will be a very, very good deal.”

When pressed about the timeline for a long-awaited deal to materialize, Trump said the agreement would be finalized in “two or three days.”
