JD Vance privately expresses reservations about Iran war – report

Vice President Vance reportedly doubts Pentagon’s claims on Iran war, expressed concerns the conflict could degrade America’s ability to handle potential threats from China, North Korea, and Russia.

Vice President JD Vance has repeatedly questioned the Pentagon’s depiction of the war in Iran and voiced reservations in closed-door meetings about the conflict, according to a report by The Atlantic.

Among other things, the report said Vance has raised concerns about whether the Defense Department has understated the depletion of US missile stockpiles after eight weeks of fighting.

Two senior administration officials told the outlet that Vance has questioned the accuracy of Pentagon information about the war. Several people familiar with the situation said he also discussed concerns about missile availability with President Donald Trump.

The issue could have major implications for US readiness, since the same weapons stockpiles would be needed in potential conflicts involving China, North Korea or Russia.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine have publicly portrayed US weapons reserves as strong and the damage to Iranian forces as severe.

Vance’s advisers said the vice president has framed his questions as strategic concerns, not as accusations that Hegseth or Caine misled Trump.

In a statement, Vance said Hegseth “is doing a great job,” while a White House official said Vance “asks a lot of probing questions about our strategic planning.”

The report said some administration officials and advisers believe the Pentagon’s public account is incomplete.

People familiar with intelligence assessments said Iran still has two-thirds of its air force, most of its missile-launching capability and most of its small fast boats, which can threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

One person familiar with the assessments said those boats are “the real threat” to restoring maritime commerce.

The report also said the war has consumed large quantities of key munitions, including missile interceptors, Tomahawks and Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimated that the US may have used more than half of its prewar supply of four key munitions.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell denied that officials were giving Trump an overly rosy picture, saying Hegseth and Pentagon leaders “consistently provide the president with the complete, unvarnished picture.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the administration’s handling of the war, saying, “The truth is that under President Trump’s leadership, the US military decimated the Iranian regime’s capabilities in just 38 days.”
