Jerusalem train station cleaner finds, returns 1-million shekel bank check

“As soon as I realized the value of the lost item, I felt a great deal of sympathy with the passenger who must have been in great distress.”

One of the cleaning staff of the Yitzhak Navon train station in Jerusalem found a wallet containing a bank check for one million shekels on Thursday, the Maariv newspaper reported on Sunday.

Towards the end of an otherwise routine shift, the worker found the wallet and brought it to his shift manager Haim Alluf.

According to the report, Alluf checked that the wallet wasn’t suspicious, opened it up and found the check.

“As soon as I realized the value of the lost item, I felt a great deal of sympathy with the passenger who must have been in great distress,” Alluf told Maariv.

After several failed attempts to contact the owner, Alluf got in touch with Itzik Shitrit of the Israel Railways lost items department.

Shitrit contacted the bank that issued the check.

Maariv reported that the check was placed in a safe over the weekend, and on Sunday, a representative of the bank came to pick up the check.

“I am proud of the station staff and the cleaner for their integrity and commitment to the passengers,” Alluf said.

The high-speed train connects Jerusalem to Ben Gurion International Airport and Tel Aviv. Approximately 15,000-20,000 passengers pass through Navon Station every day.
