Authorities have identified the suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as 22-year-old Utah resident Tyler Robinson, law enforcement sources told the New York Post.

The development marks a significant step forward in the investigation into the attack that shocked the world.

President Donald Trump, speaking on Fox News Friday, said he believed the suspect was in custody. “With a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody,” the president said. “I think we have him.”

Trump noted that “somebody very close to him turned him in,” adding that Robinson’s father persuaded him to go to police.

The president described the suspect as “28 or 29,” although investigators had earlier stated that he appeared to be college age.

He also said, “I hope he’s going to be found guilty, and I hope he gets the death penalty. What he did — Charlie Kirk was the finest person and he didn’t deserve this.”

Authorities believe Robinson fired a single shot from an elevated position about 200 yards from the tent where Kirk, 31, was seated at the university’s Losee Center.

Newly released video shows the suspect fleeing after the attack, while separate footage obtained by CNN appears to show him in a nearby residential area shortly before the shooting.

Kirk’s coffin was flown to Arizona earlier this week. On the steps of Air Force Two, his widow Erika was seen being comforted by Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President JD Vance, as tributes to the slain commentator continue.
