Lebanon to UN: Iran ‘blatantly violated’ diplomatic norms

In a letter of compliant filed with the UN, Beirut accuses the IRGC of carrying out unauthorized operations in Lebanon.

Lebanon officially complained about Iran’s violations of its sovereignty in a scathing letter to a United Nations body, accusing Tehran of effectively forcing Lebanon into war against Israel and violating international diplomatic standards.

The letter, which was sent to the UN Security Council and General Assembly, included serious accusations regarding Iran’s activities on Lebanese soil.

Among Beirut’s complaints was the claim that Tehran had “blatantly violated” the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Lebanon also accused the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of carrying out various operations inside the country without the approval or prior knowledge of the Lebanese government.

Beirut specifically referenced an incident in which several IRGC operatives were killed in an Israeli Air Force strike in Beirut.

Those IRGC members, whom Iran later claimed were civilian diplomats, had not actually been registered with Lebanese authorities as official diplomats representing the Islamic Republic, according to the letter.

The Lebanon-based Hezbollah terror group, which is heavily funded, armed, and trained by Iran, is widely viewed as Tehran’s strongest proxy force in the region.

Despite a formal resolution from the Lebanese government demanding that Hezbollah disarm, the terror group has steadfastly refused to surrender its weapons while continuing to receive extensive Iranian support.

Critics argue that Iranian backing strengthens Hezbollah and enables the terror group to operate as an independent entity within Lebanon, outside the authority of the Lebanese state.

Some analysts also noted that while a Trump-brokered ceasefire officially ended hostilities between Israel and Lebanon, it was not the Lebanese state itself that had been at war with Jerusalem, but rather Hezbollah.

Many Lebanese citizens who oppose Hezbollah blame both the terror group and its Iranian patron for acting against Lebanon’s national interests by pursuing continued armed conflict with Israel.
