Legendary Israeli photographer passes away at 92

Famous photographer David Rubinger, who died Thursday, “was among the greatest of those who documented the State of Israel,” Israel’s Government Press Office stated.

Legendary Israeli photographer David Rubinger, who created thousands of photographs providing countless details of Israel’s history, passed away Thursday at the age of 92.

One particularly famous photo shows Israeli paratroopers are seen standing at the Western Wall immediately after the IDF liberated the Old City of Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in 1967.

“David Rubinger has left a mark with thousands of iconic photographs which helped shape the Israeli narrative,” said the director of Israel’s Government Press Office Nitzan Chen. “Rubinger was among the greatest of those who documented the State of Israel.”

Rubinger’s death is notably a significant loss for the GPO specifically, which reaped countless benefits in  its use of many of his photographs.

“The GPO and Rubinger collaborated greatly over the years,” noted Chen. “Some of his famous photographs can be found in the GPO National Photo Collection. On this sad day we bow our heads on the passing of a master photographer from a generation of giants.”

Rubinger’s funeral will take place on Friday at the Har Hamenuchot cemetery in Jerusalem, where the public is invited to pay its respects.
