‘Like pre-Oct. 7th reality’ – Gaza projectiles land in kibbutz

Local leaders warn the situation mirrors pre-war conditions along the border.

Two aerial projectiles launched from the Gaza Strip landed in a kibbutz near the border in recent days, alarming residents and prompting sharp criticism from local leaders who warn that security threats remain high more than two years after the Hamas-led Oct. 7 invasion.

The projectiles — identified as kites launched from Gaza — were discovered in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, a community that was targeted by terrorists during the Oct. 7 massacres. During the invasion 15 members of the kibbutz were murdered and eight others were kidnapped and taken into Gaza.

Before the war, Hamas and other terrorist groups frequently used incendiary kites carrying flammable or explosive materials to ignite fires in Israeli border communities and farmland.

Although the kites recently found in Nahal Oz did not contain explosive materials, locals say their mere presence signals a troubling return to the pre-Oct. 7 security reality.

“For the residents of Nahal Oz, this is a serious incident that illustrates that the security reality has not changed enough,” the kibbutz said in a statement.

“We are determined to build the future of our children here, but community resilience is not a blank check,” the statement continued.

“The gap between government promises and the reality of kites landing in residential yards creates deep concern.”

A resident of the kibbutz, speaking anonymously to Kan News, said the incident raises fears of a return to the “Oct. 6 mindset” — the belief that Hamas and other Gaza-based groups are deterred and do not pose a significant threat.

Recent Israeli intelligence assessments suggest Hamas is reasserting control over the Gaza Strip and remains the dominant force in the enclave.

Despite a requirement to disarm under a ceasefire agreement brokered by President Donald Trump, Hamas has reportedly refused to surrender its weapons, further fueling concerns among border communities about their long-term security.
