‘Like pre-October 7th’ – Jordanian border fence breached, residents fume

“We are not ready to accept this situation,” says local resident. “This undermines our entire sense of security in our homes.”

A stretch of Israel’s border fence with Jordan was breached overnight Monday, with at least six infiltrators said to have successfully crossed into Israel without being apprehended by security forces.

According to a Mako report, the authorities received notice at 3:40 a.m. regarding a disturbance in the area of the fence, near Kibbutz Ashdot Ya’akov Ihud just south of the Sea of Galilee.

The report indicated that security forces only investigated the breach hours later, discovering that the fence had been compromised. Along with the damage to the fence, caused by digging under the structure and slashing of its barbed wire, security officials also discovered the tracks of at least six people, who apparently crossed into Israel undetected.

In a statement, the Israeli army said that those who crossed were likely migrants looking to work illegally in Israel, who paid Jordanian smugglers to transport them across the border. Local authorities relayed a message to residents that the incident was criminal in nature, rather than being part of a terror plot.

But Israelis living in the area told Hebrew-language media that the explanation from the authorities was far from reassuring.

“We all saw how the fence in the Gaza border areas was breached on October 7th. We heard the excuses from authorities in the south [after the fence was compromised in previous incidents] and now we’re hearing the same excuses here,” one resident of the kibbutz nearest to the fence told Mako.

“We are not ready to accept this situation. This undermines our entire sense of security in our homes.”

The resident added that “what starts as a ‘criminal’ incident can quickly become a terror incident.”

Earlier this month, a mentally ill Jordanian man approached the border fence in a location nearby to where the breach occurred.

After climbing over the fence and refusing to return to Jordanian territory, he was shot and killed by IDF soldiers.
