French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to make a landmark visit to Syria, becoming the first Western European leader to travel to Damascus since the fall of Bashar al-Assad and the rise of President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
The high-profile trip marks a dramatic shift in Western policy toward Syria’s new leadership after years of diplomatic isolation and is expected to focus on reconstruction, regional security, counterterrorism, and expanding French economic influence. Macron is also expected to arrive with a delegation of French business leaders as Damascus seeks foreign investment to rebuild the war-ravaged country.
The visit comes as Syria rapidly reemerges on the international stage following the easing of Western sanctions and a series of high-level diplomatic visits. It also follows a deadly bombing in Damascus that underscored the fragile security situation, highlighting both the opportunities and risks facing the country’s new government.
