Man caught carving swastikas outside Jewish-owned NY building

A vandal was recorded carving some 30 swastikas into a New York sidewalk.

An apparently anti-Semitic vandal was caught on camera carving over two dozen swastikas into a freshly paved sidewalk in a Brooklyn neighborhood in front of a building under construction. The owners are Jewish.

Surveillance footage taken at around midnight Saturday shows the vandal, with a flashlight in his mouth and a tool in his hand, drawing some 30 Nazi symbols on a street described by the media as “ethnically diverse.”

The suspect was also proudly taking photographs of his handiwork.

“This guy’s on a mission,” New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind said. “He wants to make a statement, and he does.”

Hikind said crews had just poured fresh concrete that day, arousing suspicion that the vandal lives in the area.

“All of the [vandalized] blocks have to be removed at a cost of five or six thousand dollars,” Hikind added.

The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force received the video and is investigating the incident.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemned the suspect’s actions. “This incident comes amid a concerning surge in reports of anti-Semitic vandalism across New York State. This act of hate is an affront to the Jewish community and to all New Yorkers,” stated Evan Bernstein, ADL New York regional director.

According to the ADL’s annual Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents, there were a total of 63 anti-Semitic incidents in Brooklyn last year and 22 in the first quarter of 2017.
