Marine Le Pen ordered to stand trial for tweeting photos of ISIS atrocities

Le Pen is accused of sharing “violent messages that incite terrorism or pornography or seriously harm human dignity.”

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has been ordered to “stand trial for tweeting pictures of Islamic State atrocities,” a judicial source said Wednesday, as cited by the French AFP news agency.

She could receive a three-year prison term and face a fine of $85,000, AFP reports.

Le Pen, 50, is president of the National Rally party. She is accused of violating French law against sharing “violent messages that incite terrorism or pornography or seriously harm human dignity” and which can be viewed by a minor, according to the report.

Her alleged crime was carried out in December 2015, just a few weeks after a deadly Friday night wave of ISIS terror attacks in Paris by gunmen and suicide bombers on a concert hall, major stadium, restaurants, and bars, almost simultaneously, in which 130 people were killed and hundreds were wounded.

Last year, Le Pen was called upon by a judge to undergo psychiatric tests in connection with the ISIS tweets, AFP notes. Le Pen, a trained lawyer, is charging that the allegation is a violation of her freedom of expression, it adds.

Photos that she shared reportedly showed the body of James Foley, an American journalist beheaded by ISIS; a man being run over by a tank; and a Jordanian pilot being burned alive in a cage.
