A massive explosion rocked a military base in western Iran on Wednesday, causing a large blaze at the site.

There were no immediate reports about injuries, the extent of the damage or the cause of the explosion.

The base, belonging to the 292 armored division, is situated at Dezful, Khuzestan Province, near the border with Iraq.

The explosion was heard in Andimeshk city 15 kilometers (9 miles) away, IRIB TV reported.

Kiamars Hajizadeh, director general of the crisis management department at Khuzestan province governorate, stated that the incident was under control and claimed that no one was injured in the incident. However, he also ordered residents surrounding the area to evacuate, fearing their safety.

IRNA, an Iranian news agency, reported that firefighters and rescue teams dispatched to the base have not been able to approach the main site of the incident due to heavy flames.

IRNA also reported that an outbreak of a fire and its spread to an ammunition depot have caused the series of explosions.
