Mexican president cancels meeting with Trump

Mexico’s president has cancelled a meeting in DC with his new US counterpart after President Trump said it would be better for him not to come if Mexico refuses to pay for a border wall between both countries.

Mexico’s President Enrique Pena Nieto said on Thursday that he has cancelled his scheduled meeting next week with US President Donald Trump.

“This morning we informed the White House that I will not attend the work meeting planned for next Tuesday with the POTUS (President of the United States),” wrote Pena Nieto on Twitter. “Mexico reiterates its willingness to work with the United States to reach accords that favor both nations.”

Earlier on Thursday, Trump tweeted that President Pena Nieto should scrap his plans to meet with Trump in Washington DC next week if he refuses to pay for a new border wall on the border between the US and Mexico.

“If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting,” wrote Trump who also focused on the massive US trade deficit with Mexico since the enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994.

“The US has a 60 billion dollar trade deficit with Mexico,” added President Trump on Twitter. “It has been a one-sided deal from the beginning of NAFTA with massive numbers… of jobs and companies lost.”

Meanwhile, a rising contender for the presidency of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador who heads the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party, has called for Mexico to file a lawsuit at the United Nations against President Donald Trump in response to his plans to quell illegal immigration into the US.

For his part, President Pena Nieto had already spoken out against the construction of a border wall between the United States and Mexico earlier this week.

“Even though Mexico recognizes the rights of all nations, of every sovereign nation to guarantee its security, Mexico does not believe in walls,” he stressed. “We will work for a border that unites us and not one that divides us.”
