Israel blames Syrian president for missiles fired at towns in Golan Heights

The last time a missile was fired from Syria into Israel was during the regime of Bashar al-Assad, whose government was overthrown in December 2024.

On Tuesday night, two missiles were fired at Israel from Syria.

The source of the missiles was the Tasil area, located around 12 kilometers from the Israeli border, past the buffer zone.

The missile was aimed at the Golan Heights and fell into an open field with no injuries.

Alarms were heard in Hispin in the Golan Heights, Nof Hagalil, Kfar Tavor, and Nazareth.

It is unclear which group in Syria was behind the missile attack.

At around the same time, the Houthis fired a missile at Israel from Yemen. The IDF is investigating whether the launches were coordinated.

The Jezreel Valley Regional Council later stated that the alarms in Nazareth were a reaction to the missile fired from Yemen rather than from Syria.

Defense Minister Israel Katz condemned the attack, saying, “We hold the Syrian president directly responsible for every threat and missile launched towards the State of Israel, and the full response will come as soon as possible.”

“We will not allow a repeat of October 7,” Katz stated.

President Ahmed al-Sharaa recently gave an interview to the Jewish Journal – the first time a Syrian head of state has spoken directly to a Jewish news outlet – in which he called US President Donald Trump a “man of peace.”

Al-Shara’a also said that he would consider making peace with Israel and that the two countries could partner to create regional stability.

“I want to be clear. The era of endless tit-for-tat bombings must end,” Al-Sharaa told the Journal.

“No nation prospers when its skies are filled with fear. The reality is, [Israel and Syria] have common enemies — and we can play a major role in regional security.”
