Mossad chief: ‘Israel has eyes and ears’ in Iran

With Iranian proxies threatening Israel from Lebanon and Syria, and mass protests erupting on the streets of Tehran, the head of Israeli intelligence communicated that Israel is watching and listening intently from within the Islamic Republic.

Speaking at a Ministry of Finance conference on Tuesday, Mossad chief Yossi Cohen weighed in on the ongoing protests in Iran, according to Kan Radio. Cohen commented, “Israel has eyes and ears [in Iran],” and would be “happy to see a social revolution” there.

In addition to commenting on the social unrest currently unfolding in the Islamic Republic, Cohen also struck a cautionary tone, warning that Iranian military ambitions are being realized in the Middle East through an “air and land corridor that pours fighters into the region in order to actualize the Iranian vision,” reported the Jerusalem Post.

Returning to the popular demonstrations in Iran, Cohen posited that the nation’s president, Hassan Rouhani, is seen by many Iranians as a disappointment, having failed to improve the economy or the plight of the average citizen. Cohen also referred to “death squads” in Iran tasked with quelling demonstrations. To date, some 22 Iranians have been killed as a result of the unrest.

From almost the beginning of the protests, Iranian leaders blamed Israel and the US for stirring up opposition to the repressive regime. To halt the spread of the protests, the Iranian government clamped down on social media and blocked the use of popular apps that Iranians use to communicate with each other.
