U.S. singer and songwriter Pink defended her Instagram post showing her two children running through the Berlin Holocaust memorial after social media critics accused her of being insensitive to the gravitas of the place.

The post features a picture of her children Willow, 8, and Jameson, 2, running between the concrete slabs that make up the memorial.

Officially called the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, it features 2,711 concrete slabs arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping field. The memorial was inaugurated on May 10, 2005, sixty years after the end of World War II in Europe.

“Dear Pink, this place is definitely not a place for hide and seek,” an Instagram user wrote.  Another wrote, “A memorial for dead people is not the place to have fun. Maybe leave the kids behind next time.”

“This is a memorial, not a playgroud[sic]!,” posted a third.

“And for all of the comments; these two children are in actuality Jewish, as am I and the entirety of my mothers [sic] family. The very person who constructed this believed in children being children, and to me this is a celebration of life after death. Please keep your hatred and judgment to yourselves.”

Pink’s mother is Jewish and she identifies as such.

Pink is enormously successfully as a musician, producing several best-selling albums. In 2004, she won the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
