Netanyahu honors Yamam on 50th anniversary: ‘No unit better in the world’

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet convened today at the Yamam base for a special government meeting marking the 50th anniversary of Israel’s legendary counter-terrorism unit.

“There is no unit better than Yamam in the world in the fight against terrorism and the rescue of hostages,” Netanyahu said.

“Yamam fighters have saved hostages under fire, led daring operations, and they are a pillar in our national security. I trust them, the people of Israel trust them, and the government of Israel salutes them.”

The prime minister praised Yamam’s long history of elite missions, highlighting the unit’s role in Israel’s most dangerous counter-terrorism operations.

Over the decades, Yamam fighters have thwarted countless terror attacks, rescued civilians under fire, and carried out precision raids that have saved lives while minimizing harm to bystanders.

Formed in 1974 after the Ma’alot massacre, Yamam — short for Yeḥida Merkazit Meyuḥedet (“Centralized Special Unit”) — has become one of the most respected counter-terrorism forces in the world.

Operating under the Israel Border Police, the unit specializes in hostage rescue, urban warfare, undercover police work, and offensive operations deep inside hostile environments.

Today, Yamam continues to serve as the spearhead of Israel’s fight against terrorism. Its operatives are deployed at a moment’s notice, capable of responding to terror attacks, hostage crises, and complex cross-border threats.

The 50th anniversary ceremony not only celebrated Yamam’s past but also reaffirmed its vital role in Israel’s future security challenges.
