Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced Wednesday morning that he has accepted an invitation from the United States to join the newly formed Board of Peace tasked with administering the Gaza Strip.
In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Netanyahu said he would join other world leaders in becoming a member of the Board of Peace.
“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he has accepted an invitation from US President Donald Trump and will join, as a member, the Board of Peace, which will be composed of world leaders.”
So far, 10 countries have joined the Board of Peace, including the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Morocco, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Israel, and the US.
President Donald Trump, the permanent chairman of the Board of Peace, suggested on Tuesday that the body could ultimately replace the United Nations.
“It might,” Trump told reporters when asked during a White House press briefing whether the board would take the place of the UN.
“The UN just hasn’t been very helpful,” Trump continued. “I’m a big fan of the UN potential, but it has never lived up to its potential.”
“The UN should have settled every one of the wars that I settled.”
“I believe you’ve got to let the UN continue because the potential is so great.”
The board, which was formally established last Thursday, received a mandate from the United Nations Security Council last November to administer the Gaza Strip through 2027.
However, the body’s charter does not make reference to the Gaza Strip, and the president himself has suggested that the board could be used to address other international conflicts.
“It’s going to, in my opinion, start with Gaza and then do conflicts as they arise,” Trump told Reuters in an interview published on Sunday.
A diplomat who spoke with Reuters on condition of anonymity said that the charter for the Board of Peace, penned by the Trump administration, made it clear the ultimate goal is to replace the UN.
“It’s a ‘Trump United Nations’ that ignores the fundamentals of the UN charter,” the diplomat said.
