Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday departed for Moscow for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the latest security-related developments in the region, and specifically Syria.

Before boarding the plane, Netanyahu said that he was leaving for “an important meeting” with Putin.

“The meetings between us are always important and this one is especially so. In light of what is currently happening in Syria, it is necessary to ensure the continued coordination between the Russian military and the IDF,” he stated.

The two leaders will meet at the Kremlin after attending a Victory Day parade marking the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany.

The two have met and spoken by phone several times during the past few years to coordinate activities in Syria, where Russia has placed significant forces and backs Syrian President Basher al-Assad’s regime.

Netanyahu’s departure to Russia took place just hours after President Donald Trump announced that the US is leaving the nuclear deal with Iran, and after another missile strike against Iranian forces stationed in Syria, which was attributed to Israel.
