Netanyahu’s goal in visiting Russia: Keep Iran away from Israel’s border

In his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will attempt to reach further understandings with regards to Syria and in particular, prevent Iranian entrenchment on Israel’s border.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be traveling to Moscow this Thursday to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding new arrangements and understandings in Syria.

Netanyahu said in his weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday that his goal is to prevent the opening of a new Iranian front against Israel from Syria.

“With the framework of these arrangements, and also without them, there is an Iranian effort to become firmly established on a permanent basis in Syria, either through the presence of ground forces, or naval forces,” Netanyahu said.

“I hope that we can reach specific understandings in order to decrease possible friction between our forces and theirs, as we did successfully until now,” Netanyahu added.

Netanyahu has reached understandings with Putin over the last eighteen months with regards to joint anti-terror activity, and agreed deconfliction mechanisms on Israeli and Russian air operations in Syria.
