Freshman Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar again stirred controversy as critics honed in on a tweet from April 2 in which she called for the release of an “Egyptian political prisoner” with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Reports also emerged of remarks she made in March downplaying the 9/11 terror attack.

“I recently met with @jkbadawy and @thefreedomi to talk about Hoda Abdelmonem, a political prisoner in Egypt. I hope that Trump brings up her case in his meeting with the regime that has imprisoned her. We must work to #FreeHoda,” the Minnesota congresswoman tweeted.

Hoda Abd al-Moneim was one of six suspected terrorists arrested by Egypt in November. Reuters news service refers to Hoda Abd al-Moneim “as a 60-year-old lawyer and Brotherhood member.” A 2014 report in The Guardian on women’s leadership roles in the Muslim Brotherhood quoted Abd al-Moneim as “a senior Muslim Sister.”

Muslim Brotherhood ambitions to impose Islamic rule openly extend to the United States. In an FBI raid in 2004, a Brotherhood document urged members to view their work in the U.S.  as a grand jihad, whose goal is to destroy western civilization from within.

The Brotherhood produced an an 18-page platform called “The Project” that encourages Muslims to become involved in democratically elected institutions on all levels in the West, from government to NGOs as part of an event to take over from within.

Rep. Omar’s tweet made news at the same time that reports of controversial comments she made at a March fundraiser filtered out. Speaking at a California meeting of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), she said the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the Twin Towers in New York City was carried out by “some people [who] did something.”

The 9/11 attack were carried out by Muslim terrorists belonging to the terrorist group Al-Qaida, which declared Holy War on the U.S. The attack cost the lives of 2,996 people and wounded 6,000 others.

Omar also praised CAIR for intensifying its advocacy work after 9/11.

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) told The Washington Free Beacon, “It is deeply disturbing that a sitting Member of Congress would trivialize the deaths of thousands of Americans, one of the most pivotal events in U.S. history.”
