Only 6,000 remain: Israeli forces rescue gazelle fawn from suspected Palestinian poachers

Israeli security forces and wildlife inspectors rescued an Israeli Mountain Gazelle fawn being illegally held in the Palestinian village of A-Ram on Saturday night. The Israeli gazelle is a protected species, with only around 6,000 believed to remain in the wild.

The fawn was discovered during a joint Border Police and Israel Nature and Parks Authority raid and transferred to the Wildlife Hospital at the Ramat Gan Safari for treatment. A 48-year-old Palestinian man from Kafr Aqab was detained on suspicion of illegal hunting, possession and trade of a protected species.

It is the second such rescue this month, after another gazelle fawn was discovered being illegally kept in a basement near the Palestinian city of Jenin on August 12.
