Orthodox Jew assaulted outside Zurich home

A 26-year-old Orthodox Jewish man was attacked as he left his home in Wiedikon, a district of Zurich, Switzerland.

The assailant, a 40-year-old man from Kosovo, punched him while shouting antisemitic slurs. Passersby intervened, overpowering the attacker and holding him down until police arrived.

The perpetrator continued to shout anti-Jewish comments even in the presence of the police.

Authorities in Zurich strongly condemned the attack.

The City Council issued a statement noting that the victim, who suffered wounds to his neck and body, thanked his rescuers after the attack.

“The cowardly act deeply affects the city council,” the statement read. “The commitment against antisemitism and the protection of Jewish fellow citizens must remain priorities.”

“The attack shows in a shocking way that the commitment against antisemitism remains enormously important,” Mayor Corine Mauch said. “This requires all of us. As an open, [solidarity-based] society, we all stand by our Jewish fellow citizens.”

Jewish groups were quick to issue statements condemning the attack.

“The attack was not a random act but was specifically directed against a Jewish person,” said the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities SIG.

“The incident thus joins the series of antisemitic attacks that have increased sharply in Switzerland since October 2023. Jewish people are the target of insults and physical violence simply because of their appearance and Jewish identity.”

“The SIG expects antisemitic violence to be consistently prosecuted and clearly named,” the group added.

The European Jewish Congress posted a statement on X that said, “We are deeply concerned by the antisemitic assault against a young Orthodox Jew in Zurich. No one should be attacked, insulted, or made to feel unsafe simply because of their Jewish identity.”

“We echo the Federation’s warning that the normalization and trivialization of antisemitic narratives—in public debate, on social media, and in everyday life—lowers the threshold for violence,” the statement continued. “This trend must be confronted decisively.”

“We welcome the steps taken by Swiss authorities to strengthen the protection of Jewish institutions, but lasting security will only come with clear political leadership, firm law enforcement, and zero tolerance for antisemitism in all its forms,” the statement concluded.
