The German Reimann family who owns Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and Panera Bread have decided to take responsibility for their ancestor’s Nazi past by donating €5 million to Holocaust survivors, Germany’s Bild am Sonntag reports.

In March, Bild reported that family patriarchs Albert Reimann senior and junior were active Nazi party members who relied heavily on slave labor to build their wealth in the industrial chemicals sector.

According to the report, Reimann junior wrote a letter to Nazi SS Commander Heinrich Himmler which said his family is purely Aryan that firmly backed “race theory.”

Rather than shunning away from the allegations, the Reimann children commissioned economics historian Professor Paul Erker of the University of Munich to investigate the claims.

In a recent interview with Bild, Peter Harf, managing partner of the Reimann’s investment firm said that Erker’s preliminary report was horrifying,

“It is all correct. (Albert) Reimann senior and Reimann junior were guilty…they belonged in jail,” he said.

“When Professor Erker reported, we were speechless. We were ashamed and white as the wall. There is nothing to gloss over. These crimes are disgusting,” Harf said. “As soon as the book by Professor Erker is finished, we will publish it. Unadorned. We will not interfere. The whole truth has to be on the table.”

The Reimann children accepted responsibility for their ancestor’s crimes and decided to donate €5 million to the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, an organization that helps provide services and care to Holocaust survivors.
