Pakistan allegedly supplied ship intelligence to IRGC in Hormuz passage deal

Iraq also reached a similar arrangement with Tehran, providing information on vessels transiting the strait.

Pakistan has entered into a secret arrangement with Iran to provide the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps with intelligence on ships moving through the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for securing energy supplies and safe maritime passage, Reuters reported Tuesday, raising questions about Islamabad’s role as a mediator between Washington and Tehran.

The agreement came as Iran expanded its control over shipping traffic through the strategic waterway following a US naval blockade on Iranian ports.

Iraq also reached a similar arrangement with Tehran, providing information on vessels transiting the strait, including ownership details, cargo specifications, and destinations.

Five sources involved in the matter said Iran had changed its strategy from attempting to fully close the Strait of Hormuz to regulating access through bilateral arrangements with neighboring states.

Pakistan, which has publicly attempted to position itself as a mediator in the dispute between the West and Iran, reportedly agreed to cooperate with Tehran after concerns over electricity supplies and the transfer of Qatari gas created pressure to secure stable passage arrangements.

A Pakistani source familiar with the negotiations said, “The Revolutionary Guards sometimes change the rules of the game, so it’s difficult to keep things on track, but we’re working on it.”

In Iraq, teams within the Oil Ministry reportedly transferred shipping data to Iranian authorities to avoid what officials described as “incidents” in the waterway.

An Iraqi official said, “Iraq is a close ally of Iran, and any deterioration in the Iraqi economy would also harm Iran’s economic interests in the country.”

Iraq, whose economy relies on oil revenues for 95% of its income, succeeded in moving two giant tankers last Sunday.

President Donald Trump also sharply criticized Iran’s demands regarding sanctions relief and compensation, saying, “Iran’s latest response to the proposed agreement is a piece of garbage.”
