Palestinian factions battle in Lebanese refugee camp

Several people were wounded during clashes between rival Palestinian factions in the Ein el-Hilweh camp in Lebanon.

Rival Palestinian factions clashed on Sunday in the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp in southern Lebanon.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that the clashes – between members of Palestinian Authority (PA) head Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah group and others who belong to more extreme Muslim factions – left several people wounded. The situation reportedly calmed before Sunday night.

The agency said that the fighting also caused material damage in Lebanon’s largest refugee camp, situated near the southern port city of Sidon.

The clashes, not uncommon in the camp, came a day after Abbas ended a three-day visit to Lebanon.

Ein el-Hilweh is notorious for its lawlessness and is home to Muslim terrorists who sympathize with the Islamic State (ISIS) and al-Qaeda. The Lebanese Armed Forces are not allowed to enter the camp, lending it the name “zone of un-law” by the Lebanese media.

Many people wanted by the Lebanese authorities are believed to have taken refuge in the camp.
