Partial IDF withdrawal marks start of 72-hour hostage release countdown

While the truce has taken effect, the IDF has stopped short of declaring the war over, citing continued exchanges of fire and potential threats.

The Israel Defense Forces began a partial withdrawal from Gaza at noon Friday, activating a 72-hour countdown to the release of hostages under the first phase of the ceasefire deal with Hamas.

The military confirmed it has repositioned its troops along the “Yellow Line,” in line with the agreement reached through U.S.-brokered mediation.

The military reported dismantling outposts and fortifications ahead of the ceasefire’s start.

While the truce has taken effect, the IDF has stopped short of declaring the war over, citing continued exchanges of fire and potential threats.

Within 72 hours—by noon Monday—Hamas is expected to release the 48 hostages it is holding, beginning with the 20 believed to be alive.

The army confirmed that as of noon, “IDF troops have positioned themselves on the updated deployment lines, in accordance with the outline of the ceasefire and the return of the hostages agreement.”

Despite the withdrawal, the IDF remains in control of roughly 53% of Gaza’s territory—mostly rural zones outside major cities.

These include a security buffer along the border, the Philadelphi Corridor near Egypt, Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya in the north, and sections of Rafah and Khan Younis in the south.

Meanwhile, residents of Gaza have begun returning northward along the coastal al-Rashid Road as IDF troops reposition.

Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesperson, warned Palestinians against approaching military positions, saying, “According to the agreement, IDF troops will remain deployed in specific areas of the Gaza Strip. Do not approach IDF troops in the area until further notice. Approaching the forces exposes you to danger.”

He added that movement between the southern and northern parts of the Strip is permitted via the coastal road and the Salah a-Din highway, but cautioned civilians to avoid sensitive areas and maritime activity near Gaza’s coast, warning that “approaching the buffer zone is extremely dangerous.”

Hostage releases are expected to coincide with U.S. President Donald Trump’s arrival in Israel on Monday morning, when he is scheduled to address the Knesset before departing the same day.

A limited reception will be held due to the holiday schedule.
