Peace Now protest backfires as ‘illegal outpost’ sign moved from Jewish town to Arab settlement

A Peace Now activist and an Israeli politician reportedly posted an “illegal settlement” sign in front of a Jewish community in Samaria. The sign was relocated to Khan Al Ahmar, an illegal Arab town slated for demolition.

On Wednesday, former Peace Now director Yariv Oppenheimer and Meretz party chairman Nitzan Horowitz visited Samaria’s Binyamin region, installing an “illegal outpost” sign in front of a Jewish community there, Arutz Sheva reported.

Within hours, the sign was removed and relocated to the entrance of an illegal Arab outpost called Khan al-Ahmar, which Israel’s Supreme Court recently ruled must be demolished due to its location and the circumstances under which it was constructed.

“Along the route traveled by the Peace Now activists who posted their sad little sign, they passed over a dozen illegal Arab outposts,” Naomi Kahn of Regavim told World Israel News. Regavim is an Israeli NGO concerned with land issues.

“In fact, there are more than 800 illegal outposts in Area C, the areas of Judea and Samaria under full Israeli jurisdiction, created by the Palestinian Authority with European funding,” Kahn said.

“The only question I have for Peace Now is, do you not see, or do you not wish to see? Is this a question of visual impairment or of hypocrisy?” Kahn asked.

The head of the Binyamin Regional Council, Yisrael Gantz, made light of the sign in comments made to Arutz Sheva, remarking that the “people of the extreme left have lost their way” and “probably do not know the area well.”

“Good people came to their assistance and moved the sign to the proper place,” he added.

“We thank Peace Now and the radical left for saving the money required for printing the sign and of course we would like to prepare a few more for the dozens of illegal Arab outposts in Judea and Samaria,” Gantz concluded.
