The Temple Mount has been the site of multiple incidents of Palestinian violence against Jewish visitors to the holy site.
Israeli policemen arrested two members of the Muslim Waqf on Wednesday after they assaulted a group of Israelis who were on a visit to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the attack was unprovoked.
The two assailants approached the group of visitors and “one of them then punched him [the victim] in the face, and the other suspect continued to push him around,” Rosenfeld stated.
“Police units that were on the scene immediately responded and arrested both members of the Waqf and took them into custody at the Old City’s police headquarters.”
The two were taken for questioning.
The victim was lightly injured and did not require medical treatment.
“Police units are continuing to carry out security measures on the Temple Mount in order to prevent any incidents, and to make sure that regular visits are carried out safely and on schedule,” Rosenfeld further stated.
The Muslim Waqf, under Jordanian guidance, is entrusted securing the Temple Mount.
The Temple Mount has been the site of multiple incidents of Palestinian violence against Jewish visitors to the holy site.
The site is the place where the first two Jewish Temples stood and is the holiest site to Judaism, while Palestinians deny the Temples ever existed.
