A plurality of Americans support Israeli airstrikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities, according to a poll released after the start of the IDF’s air campaign in Iran.
On Friday, just hours after Israeli warplanes began bombing targets in Iran, kicking off Operation Rising Lion, Fox News reported the results from a survey conducted by the Ronald Reagan Institute.
The poll was conducted between May 22 and June 2, weeks before the beginning of the air campaign, as nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran continued.
A sixth round of talks, slated to be held in Oman on Sunday, was canceled after Iran announced it would not take part in the negotiations, citing Israel’s ongoing strikes.
The Reagan Institute poll found that nearly half (45%) of respondents would support Israeli airstrikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities, should negotiations fail.
Just over a third (37%) said they were opposed to Israeli airstrikes, while 18% were unsure.
Republicans were roughly twice as likely to back Israeli airstrikes as Democrats were, with six in 10 self-described members of the GOP supporting Israeli strikes, compared to just 32% of Democrats and 35% of independents.
Twenty-seven percent of Republicans oppose Israeli airstrikes, compared to a third of independents and over half of Democrats.
Since the beginning of the Israeli air campaign and subsequent Iranian ballistic missile and suicide drone attacks on Israeli cities, President Donald Trump has distanced himself from Israel’s attacks, emphasizing that the U.S. had not participated in the strikes.
