Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with President Idriss Deby of the Republic of Chad Sunday late afternoon at his office in Jerusalem, after which the two leaders will issue statements to the media.
They will meet again over dinner.
“This is an historic visit, the first by a President of Chad to Israel since the establishment of the state,” the Prime Minister’s Office stated.
“The visit comes against the background of the manifold diplomatic efforts led by Prime Minister Netanyahu in recent years, the statement said.
In recent years, Netanyahu has made the development of relations with African nations a top priority.
Ties between Jerusalem and the Muslim-majority nation were severed in 1972.
“This is an additional diplomatic breakthrough. This is an historic and important visit that comes against the background of the efforts we have led. I welcome the President of Chad on his arrival in Israel,” Netanyahu stated.
President Reuven Rivlin will hold a working meeting with Deby later in the evening.
The visit has been kept hushed until Sunday.
