Just days ahead of the U.S. presidential election, the reopening of the Clinton email investigation angers the Democratic candidate’s supporters, while encouraging the Trump campaign.
The latest development in the intense, mud-slinging U.S. presidential race concerns the FBI’s inadvertent discovery of more suspicious emails concerning Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. The emails surfaced during an investigation of former Congressman Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, vice-chairwoman of the Clinton campaign.
Weiner, who destroyed his career and now his marriage over an uncontrollable sexting habit, is the subject of a criminal probe into allegations that he was sending illicit text messages to a minor. The investigation led to the discovery of tens of thousands of emails originating from Clinton’s server.
The emails reportedly appeared on a computer belonging solely to Weiner and not shared with Abedin, which apparently is why the FBI had not seen the emails during its initial investigation of Clinton.
FBI Director James Comey – acting against the advice of the Justice Department, considering the close proximity of the November 8 election – on Friday alerted several members of Congress to the new development.
At a Republican rally in Phoenix Saturday, the party’s presidential candidate Donald Trump slammed the Justice Department, claiming it was trying to protect his opponent.
“Now it’s reported that the Department of Justice is fighting with the FBI. That’s because the Department of Justice is trying their hardest to protect the criminal activity of Hillary Clinton,” Trump asserted.
Clinton and her team are lashing out at the “unprecedented” and “deeply troubling” FBI announcement. “It is pretty strange to put something like that out with such little information right before an election,” Clinton stated at a support rally in Florida on Saturday.
