Report: European powers dropping out of Trump’s Gaza mission

American allies likely to end cooperation with US forces in Israel charged with supervising operations in Gaza, with diplomats calling the mission “directionless.”

A number of America’s European allies are poised to terminate their involvement in a US-led mission in Israel charged with supervising the Gaza ceasefire and overseeing the transfer of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, several diplomats claim.

In a report published on Tuesday afternoon, Reuters cited multiple diplomats who said the mission has been mishandled, leading the European countries that contributed troops to the CMCC to reassess their participation.

One source called the CMCC “directionless,” Reuters reported.

Established in the southern Israeli city of Kiryat Gat last October, the CMCC was envisioned as a critical player in President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan.

The CMCC was tasked with coordinating the entry and distribution of aid in Gaza, enforcing the truce between Israel and Hamas, and providing foreign governments with a channel for engaging Gaza without interacting with Hamas.

However, the diplomats cited in Tuesday’s report said the mission has thus far been a “disaster.”

“Everybody thinks it’s a disaster, but there is no alternative,” one source said.

With the Trump administration announcing the beginning of phase two of the Gaza deal, the CMCC is slated to take on an even larger role in Gaza, working with the newly formed Board of Peace and the Palestinian committee tasked with administering the Gaza Strip, while also coordinating reconstruction work.

Thus far, however, the CMCC has achieved little progress on the ground, and aside from some white papers drafted on the post-war governance of Gaza and proposals for reconstruction, the CMCC does not offer a clear vision for how the US and its allies will handle the coastal enclave.

Amid the growing frustration among European powers with troops deployed to the CMCC, Tuesday’s report said that the officials from France, Germany, and Britain have failed to return from their New Year vacation, a sign that their respective governments are likely poised to withdraw their personnel.
