Israel reportedly destroyed a major Syrian air defense base in what appears to be the fourth such attack in a week.
Syrian sources are reporting that Israel’s Air Force (IAF) carried out a raid against a Syrian military base on Tuesday night, destroying an air defense system.
Israeli warplanes struck Syrian army positions northwest of Damascus, Syrian opposition sources said. The targets reportedly included radar systems.
The base is said to be of utmost significance to the Syrian army.
The IDF has remained silent on the report, as was its conduct in similar past instances.
The Syrian regime has yet to respond.
This report is the fourth to emerge on Israeli strikes in Syria in the past week, including an attack on Sunday against a local militia commander and another against a Hezbollah weapons shipments over the weekend, to which the Syrian military responded by firing an anti-aircraft missile at the IAF aircraft.
Israeli government and military officials have reiterated Israel’s commitment to act decisively to protect its citizens and prevent the transfer of advanced arms to the Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon.
“The next time the Syrians use their air defense systems against our airplanes, we will destroy all of them without thinking twice,” Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman warned earlier this week.
Speaking at the IDF induction center on Sunday, Liberman said Israel has no reason to interfere in the Syrian conflict, but will operate to stop the transfer of advanced weapons to Hezbollah, largely financed by Iran.
IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Gadi Eizenkot, addressing the changeover ceremony for the head of the IDF northern command, also on Sunday, said Hezbollah continues with its efforts to acquire dangerous and accurate weapons intended to harm the Israeli home front. He reiterated Liberman’s commitment to prevent arms transfers to Hezbollah.
