Report: Majority of US Citizens Support Entry Ban, Despite Protests

A conservative-leaning US polling company has found that most Americans are in favor of Trump’s entry ban on refugees from seven Muslim-majority countries.

Despite the media uproar and huge demonstrations against President Donald Trump’s executive order, banning entry to the US from seven countries, most voters approve of the measure, according to a Rasmussen Reports survey.

The national telephone and online survey finds that 57 percent of Americans favor a temporary ban on refugees from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen – which Trump has ordered – until the federal government approves its ability to screen out potential terrorists from entering the country.

The ban does not include naturalized US citizens.

“Similarly,” the report continues, “56 percent favor a temporary block on visas prohibiting residents of Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen from entering the United States until the government approves its ability to screen for likely terrorists. Thirty-two percent oppose this temporary ban, and 11% are undecided.”

These countries were already identified as “countries of concern” under the Obama administration. In December 2015, the former US president signed into law a measure placing restrictions on travelers who had visited Iran, Iraq, Sudan or Syria on or after March 1, 2011. Libya, Somalia and Yemen were added to the list two months later in an effort to address a growing threat from foreign terrorists.

The survey was taken ahead of the weekend protests against the executive order, which was signed late Friday afternoon.
