While the Kremlin’s spokesman said that Flynn’s resignation was “not our business,” several Russian lawmakers expressed their disappointment.
The Russian government has no stake in the resignation of US national security adviser Michael Flynn, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
“This is not our business,” Peskov responded to reporters. “This is the internal business of the Americans. It is the internal business of President Trump’s administration.”
Russia’s relevance in the matter is a result of Flynn’s admission, in his resignation letter, to having provided “incomplete information” to Vice-President Mike Pence regarding discussions with the Russian ambassador to the US during Trump’s transition period into the White House.
Several media outlets claimed that Flynn and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak both covered the topic of US sanctions against Russia in their conversations.
While Peskov rejected any assertions that Flynn’s resignation was of any concern to the Kremlin, several Russian lawmakers expressed their disappointment, including Leonid Slutsky, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
“It’s obvious that Flynn was forced to write the letter of resignation under a certain amount of pressure,” Slutsky stated, according the Russian RIA news agency. “The target was Russia-US relations, undermining confidence in the new US administration.”
