Scene of another attempted stabbing attack at Damascus Gate in Jerusalem's Old City on May 7. (Flash90)
Israel Police reported an attempted stabbing attack outside the Old City of Jerusalem Sunday evening. No casualties were reported.
A 16-year-old Palestinian girl approached police forces stationed at the staircase next to the Damascus Gate entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem and drew a knife prior to shouting, Allah Akbar. The forces responded and neutralized the assailant.
A knife was found on the scene, as was a letter which read a verse from the Koran, along with goodbyes to her family. The letter was signed with the word “shahid” – martyr.
“The female terrorist approached Border Police officers that were on patrol at Damascus Gate and waved a knife in the air at the officers, and the terrorist was shot and critically injured,” Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld stated. She died of her wounds.
“Police forces and Border Police are deployed throughout the city and will continue to maintain the security of all residents, with the clear statement that anyone who tries to harm civilians and police forces will be met with a determined and immediate response,” Jerusalem District Commander Yoram Halevi stated.
The assailant was identified as Fatima Hajiji, a resident of Qarawat Bani Zeid, a village north of Ramallah, the Palestinian health ministry said.
