President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East is set to travel to Israel on Wednesday, Axios has reported, as part of a fact-finding mission for the administration to assess the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
The report cited two US officials with direct knowledge of White House envoy Steve Witkoff’s travel plans.
Witkoff’s trip to Israel marks his first visit to the Jewish state in nearly three months.
According to the two officials, the 68-year-old real estate mogul and diplomat has been dispatched by President Trump to inspect the situation on the ground in Gaza, amid conflicting claims regarding the humanitarian situation inside the Gaza Strip.
“The president wants to know more about what the humanitarian situation in Gaza is in order to know how to get more assistance to civilians in Gaza,” one of the two officials cited in the report said.
One of the officials also said that Witkoff is considering visiting the Gaza Strip in person during his trip to Israel, with possible visits to relief distribution centers operated by the US-based Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
Israel has pushed back on claims by European powers, including Britain and France, as well as the United Nations, that Gaza civilians are currently suffering from a famine.
Israel, highlighting the expansion of aid transfers to the Gaza Strip and special measures to facilitate aid collection by Gazans—including airdrops of aid packages and unilateral cease-fires during daylight hours in heavily populated areas—has stated that it has not prevented humanitarian aid from entering the coastal enclave.
