Suspect reported dead after synagogue shooting, car ramming in Michigan; no additional casualties

Police were on the scene at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, after reports of gunfire and a vehicle ramming at the synagogue, prompting a major law enforcement response, shelter-in-place orders, and evacuations of nearby facilities, CBS reported.

Law enforcement sources later told multiple US media outlets that the suspect involved in the attack is dead, although police have not officially confirmed that report. There were no additional casualties reported.

Police said shots were fired and a vehicle was involved in the incident. The suspect approached a synagogue security guard, who engaged the individual. Authorities initially believed the suspect might still be at large as officers searched the surrounding area.

Residents in nearby neighborhoods were instructed to remain indoors while police worked to secure the area. Bouchard said the situation remains “a work in progress” and asked the public to stay sheltered until authorities declare the area safe.

Students and staff from a neighboring school and daycare affiliated with the synagogue were evacuated as a precaution. Officials also said police presence would be increased at Jewish institutions across the area.

The Jewish Federation of Detroit said it is “aware of an active security incident at Temple Israel” and confirmed that law enforcement officers were responding. CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, reported that the federation directed all local Jewish organizations to enter a “lockout protocol,” restricting entry and exit from their buildings.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she is monitoring the situation and coordinating with state authorities.

“This is heartbreaking. Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace,” Whitmer said. “Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan. I am hoping for everyone’s safety.”

Temple Israel, founded in 1941, has more than 3,000 members and houses the Early Childhood Learning Center preschool. West Bloomfield Township, a suburb about 30 minutes from Detroit, has a population of just over 66,000. The Metro Detroit area is home to about 71,000 Jewish residents according to the most recent survey by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
